Why Learning Sticks Better When It’s Silly

Serious question: why do we remember the dumbest jingles of our childhood but forget the password we set yesterday? The brain isn’t broken—it’s optimized. Enter the Von Restorff effect (a.k.a. the “isolation effect”), which basically says: weird stuff sticks. When something is distinctive, absurd, or funny compared to the bland background, it hijacks memory encoding and gets top billing in recall later (von Restorff, 1933; Hunt, 1995).

Think about it. Nobody’s out here reciting their high school chemistry table of ions, but sing a few bars of Schoolhouse Rock and suddenly “Conjunction Junction” is back like it never left. That’s not nostalgia; it’s biology. Humor, novelty, and rhythm all act as cognitive neon signs, making learning sticky (Schmidt, 1994). Music, in particular, has been shown to strengthen long-term recall by combining dual coding (words + melody) and retrieval cues (Wallace, 1994).

This isn’t just fun trivia—it’s instructional design strategy. Researchers in cognitive psychology keep showing us that retrieval practice (actively pulling info back out of memory) and spaced repetition (revisiting it later) are powerful learning tools (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006; Cepeda et al., 2006). Layer those onto a silly song, and you’ve got a bio-hack. The tune handles retrieval cues, the absurdity makes it memorable, and the rhythm helps with chunking and pacing—directly reducing cognitive load (Sweller, 1988).

So yeah, when I make ridiculous songs about security models or risk formulas, it’s not because I’ve lost it—it’s because your brain loves it. Absurdity isn’t a distraction; it’s a design principle.
